Mani Ratnam at his best

What makes Mani Ratnam a special director is the way he captures emotions and romance. Though he had faced a few failures, he was back with 'Ok Bangaram', which impressed the multiplex audiences and the veteran director is now back with a romantic entertainer, which was promoted as an intense love story. Karthi romances debutante Aditi Rao Hydari in this movie and the film has hit the theaters. Read on to find out how the film is.

The film is set in the backdrop of Kargil war between India and Pakistan in 1999. Varun (Karthi) is a fighter pilot. He falls in love with a doctor named Leela (Aditi). Leela reciprocates the love and they decide to get into a relationship. But Varun is not interested in a commitment due to a reason and due to his attitude Leela starts suffering. The relationship gets into the verge of breaking. But suddenly everything changes as Varun gets jailed by the Pakistani authorities. How he gets freed and how he wins back his love is what the rest of the story all about.

Technical aspects

The film looks aesthetic and the credit goes to the cinematographer Ravi Varman for showcasing the locales of Kashmir in a very beautiful way. AR Rahman's music is soothing and the background score is one of the major highlights. The screenplay and direction of Mani Ratnam is very good.

Karthi gets to play a complex role and the way he pulled off it is excellent. But the best performer of the film is Aditi Rao Hydari. Apart from looking gorgeous, she emotes very well and steals the show. Her performance in emotional scenes is superb.

Minus Points

Slow second half

With Cheliyaa, Mani Ratnam once again proved why he is the best when it comes to romantic films. The way he portrayed the romance and the emotions is beautiful. The lead pair is beautiful, but Aditi Rao Hydari steals the show. Some may feel the second half is slow, but those who love Mani Ratnam movies will enjoy this movie, which has good emotions, music and visually stunning.
