Venkatesh is back with a sports drama. He plays a boxing coach in 'Guru', which is the remake of 'Irudhi Suttru', a very succceessful Tamil movie. Sudha Kongara helmed this movie, produced under YNOT Studios banner by S.Sashikanth. This is the debut of Ritika Singh in Telugu. Read on to know whether the film is as good as the Tamil version and if Venkatesh has done justice to the role, which was originally played by Madhavan.
Adhitya (Venkatesh) is a boxer, who despite being very talented, fails in his career due to some politics in the association. He loves boxing and after few years he decides to turn a boxing coach and spot talent. But he gets annoyed with the politics again and he can't digest that some people are being selected just because of their 'good' relation with the members of the association. He gets into a quarrel with the head of the association and so he gets transferred to Vizag. He wants to spot some talent there and train them to get into the national team. Aditya finds out that the people over there has no knowledge about boxing but he gets taken aback by the strength and self defense of a worker named Rameshwari aka Ramudu (Ritika). It dawns upon Aditya that she would become a good boxer if he trains her. Though reluctant at first, Ramudu agrees to be Aditya's student. But things get a drastic turn when Ramudu decides to disappoint Aditya and loses a match to frustrate him. How differences crop up between them and how after facing many problems, Ramudu becomes a national champion forms the rest of the story.
The background score of Santosh Narayanan is an asset for the movie. The story is good and director Sudha Kongara shows her mettle. She extracts very good performances from all the actors. She is a talent to watch out for. The production values are good. The cinematography is also very good.
Venkatesh shines in the role of a boxing coach. This is probably one of his career best performances. A new Venky is seen in the movie. Ritika Singh is beautiful and she gives a stunning performance. She is here to stay. Nassar, Zakir Hussain and others are very good in their roles.
Story and direction
Venkatesh and Ritika's performances
Venkatesh as 'Guru' is excellent and the senior actor showcases his other side in the movie. The film is a very good sports drama with good performances and emotions. Rarely, we get to see films that are packed with such emotions and the director should be lauded for making a good film. There are some points where the film looks a little slow paced but all in all, the film ends up as a very good sports drama.
Excellent Sports drama
