Riveting investigative crime thriller

After 'Oopiri', Karthi has become a household name in Telugu states and the star actor has now come up with the drama 'Khakee'. Also starring Rakul Preet, this film has been directed by H Vinoth and produced by Umesh Gupta of Aditya Music in Telugu. Read on to know how the film is.

The film is set in late 90s, when mobile phones were not popular in India. A bunch of dacoits commit a series of murders in Chennai. Dheeraj (Karthi), a police trainee, falls in love with Priya (Rakul Preet), a naughty girl. As both of them get married and Dheeraj becomes a DSP, the case of the dacoits becomes more and more complex and the cops get more and more desperate to nab the culprits, who are behind those heinous crimes. Dheeraj, who has always been sincere and reels with anger over the injustice being done to common man, becomes restless as the police couldn't make much headway in the case. He decides to crack the case come what way despite discouragement from fellow officers. How it happens forms the rest of the story.

Technical aspects

More than the songs, it's the background score of Ghibran which takes the film to another level. The action sequences were well-choreographed. The sequences in the desert were stunning. The story is based on a real story and the director has clearly done a lot of research into the shocking incidents. The screenplay is engaging, though the length of the film in the second half seems more. H Vinoth excels as a director.

Karthi has put in a lot of hard work for the film. As a sincere cop, he has given an excellent performance. He is particularly good in the grueling action episodes. Rakul Preet Singh looks cute and she is very good as Karthi's wife. The performances of other actors are also very good.

Minus Points

Little bit lengthy second half

'Khakee' is an engrossing investigative crime thriller. Director H Vinoth has done a lot of research on the spine-chilling killings, which took place between 1995-2005 and has come up with a very engaging script. Karthi excels as a sincere cop and Rakul as his wife is very good. The background score and cinematography complement the proceedings well. Though the film seems a little bit long in the second half, the way the hero takes up the case and nabs the notorious gang, which evades the police for a long time, has been showcased extremely well. All in all, 'Khakee' is a very good crime thriller.
