Routine commercial potboiler

Sai Dharam Tej has hardly come out of his comfort zone. After the failure of 'Thikka', he is desperate to make a comeback and he teamed up with Gopichand Malineni, best known for commercial potboilers, for the movie 'Winner'. Rakul Preet Singh paired opposite Tej in this movie. SS Thaman's songs are good and the movie has had good pre-release buzz. Let's see if the movie is indeed a winner or not.

In his childhood, Siddhu (Tej) is very close to his father (Jagapathi Babu) and their bond irks his grandfather (Mukesh Rishi) for some reason. So much so, Mukesh Rishi chalks out a plan to make Siddhu run away from him and successfully executes it. A young and energetic Siddhu falls in love with Sitara (Rakul Preet Singh) and is about to express his love to her, when the latter's father fixes her marriage with Jagapathi Babu's son Aadi (Thakur Anoop Singh). Siddhu learns that Aadi is a criminal in the disguise of his father. How he learns horse riding, wins the race and also proves he is the real son of Jagapathi Babu forms the rest of the story.

Technical aspects

Thaman's music for the film is ok, but his background score is very good. The production values are very good. The locations are chosen well for the songs. Cinematographer Chota K Naidu does a very good job as usual. The story is routine and the direction is also just about ok.

The performance of Sai Dharam Tej is the major highlight of the movie and he is very good. Rakul Preet Singh is very glamorous and acts well. Thakur Anoop Singh impresses in a negative role and the young actor, who is also Mr. World, will sure get many good roles in Tollywood.

Plus Points

Sai Dharam Tej

Rakul Preet's glamour and others' performances

Prudhvi and Ali's comedy

Anasuya's item song

Technical department

Minus Points

Routine story

Weak direction

Over the top scenes here and there

Winner has a routine story and the way Gopichand Malineni has narrated is just ok. Sai Dharam Tej excels in the lead role and shares a good chemistry with Rakul Preet Singh. Jagapathi Babu's role should have been etched out well. Prudhvi and Ali's comedy tracks are good and Vennela Kishore also entertains. The horse race sequences were shot well. Except for the entertainment part and some very well shot sequences, the film is just ok. All in all, 'Winner' may win the hearts of the mega fans.
